Production and consumption of fish meat in the World and in F.R. Yugoslavia

Catch of fish in sea and inland waters by the end of the twentieth century reached nearly 100 million tonnes. Further increase of catch is practically not possible because of danger for some of the most caught fish, and because of disturbance of equilibrium in some ecological systems. Meeting the increasing requirements for fish meat is possible with production of fish in aquaculture. Production of fish in aquaculture inreases from year to year and now makes one fourth of fish for human nutrition. It is expected that in 30 years the share of fish from aquaculture in meat consumption will be 50%/. Yugoslavia has possibilities to increase the catch of seafish and to increase the production of fish in aquaculture both in fresh waters and in mariculture. The meat consumption in the World is very different so that there are countries where the annual fish meat consumption exceeds 50 kg per capita, as well as the countries in which the meat consumption is lower than five kilograms per capita per annum.
