Management of trade in plums and plum products

Plums and plum products are important agricultural produce. Production and processing of plums in Yugoslav economic environment have reached, a prominent development level. Contrary to that, trade in these significant products has been legging bihind. That is why due attention should be paid to management of trade in plums and plum products as it is a prerequisite for increase of production output and for constant renewal of the reproduction cycle. Trade in plums and plum products has been affected by general problems in trade and consumption of other agricultural produce and foodstuffs such as: poor purchasing ability, low standard of living, inferior marketing strategy, decreased export possibilities, etc. Trade in plums and plum products has certain specific features compared not only with industrial but also with other agricultural produce, which is often neglected. This particularly applies to characteristics and heterogeneity of a product from the standpoint of consumption characteristics of market and special commercial institutions dealing in trade. distribution channels, specific culture of consumption of plum products etc. Specific features of trade in plums and plum products call for application of general and special management and marketing principles and constant introduction of innovations into certain segments of trade. The objective of this paper is to underline problems and specific features of trade in plums and plum products and suggest measures and activities to be taken to the effect if improved efficiency of its functioning in domestic and foreign trade.
