Heavy metals in water and sediments in rivers Ralja, Velika Morava and Danube [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

The results of investigations into the influence of waste water of SARTID Metallurgical Industry, Serbia (Yugoslavia) on the content of heavy metals in water and sediments of Ralja river, the waste water recipient as well as downstream water currents of the rivers Velika Morava and Danube are presented. The research is performed during the period of the increased production rate. Having as a consequence the increased percentage of waste iron, zinc and lead in waste water. General chemical parameters of the river water, as well as detailed analyses of sediment at various locations (including sequential extraction, aimed at the characterization of heavy metal association forms) were performed. High concentrations of several metals were observed in various sedimentary phases in river Ralja, identifying the iron and steel industrial complex as the major pollution source. Besides high concentrations of iron compounds, the sediments of Ralja are heavily polluted with zinc and lead. Furthermore, zinc and lead are dominantly present in highly forms, representing a potential threat for ecosystems of Ralja river and downstream water currents of the rivers Velika Morava and Danube. Very important thing is that the slight pollution elements emission into Velika Morava and Danube is established.
