Development and future challenge of the internal quality of sugarbeet

The technical value is defined by the properties of the beet which determine the extractability of sugar. Continuous investigation was done on the content of sugar, potassium, sodium and alpha-amino-nitrogen and the influence of variety, site, agronomic factors, harvest techniques and storage on these parameters. During the last years, research concentrates on further parameters like the content of invert sugar, betaine or raffinose. Investigations on the assessment of the technical quality based on relationships established via regression equations or derived from the sugar technological process followed. Expected longer campaigns require additional increase of external beet quality as prerequisite of reduced sugar losses. Minimal mechanical impact has to meet an increased mechanical resistance of the beet. The reduction of dirt tare and an optimal protection of beet clamps against frost need more investigation. Attention has to be payed to biochemical processes in the beet, especially to stress overcoming mechanisms. Not at last the question arises to what extent transgene beet may contribute to improvement of quality or opens new possibilities.
