Weed beets infesting sugar beet fields since the seventies originated through the import in seed bags of hybrids between cultivated beet and ruderal inland wild beet that occurred in the seed production area. Few data are available on the biology of descendants of these hybrids and their adaptation to weediness. Such a knowledge is necessary in order to assess the risk of appearance of herbicide resistant weed beet linked to the release of transgenic resistant sugar beet varieties (GMO). We have studied flowering time and pollen flow for different density conditions in different populations of weed beet to measure the impact of hybridization between sugar beet and weed beet. In addition, a computer model is currently designed to evaluate the influence of cropping systems on transgene escape in time and space, which will allow adoption of lower risk cultural practices.
