Analysis of yield factors of sugar beet in the growing area of the Nordzucker

The different regions of the whole area of the Nordzucker AG show quite often big differences in yield and quality of sugar beet, although soils and climates are nearly the same. Looking from the advisory side you come to the question about the reasons for those differences. Therefore, during the campaign 1999, 54 farmers have been asked for all data concerning sugar beet production. Those data have been sampled and evaluated by PC. Looking at yield, sugar content and beet quality, the average of the results of the 54 farms show a very good conformity in comparison with the results of the company's total of 11,000 farms. The range in beet yield of those 54 farms went from 35 up to 75 t per ha, the range in sugar content from 16.0 up to 20.5 / and the standard losses to molasses from 1.05 to 1.87/, During the evaluation, the results showed quite soon that the differences in quality of sugar beet were mainly due to nitrogen fertilization. The farmers using organic manure spread an average of 90 kg per ha more than those farmers with only mineral fertilizer. Although farmers with organic manure achieved the same beet yields, the sugar content was lower and the standard losses to molasses higher, and they therefore had 150.00 euros less gross margin per ha. Furthermore, the study revealed that farmers who don't get their soil analyzed regarding its N-content (Nmin) averaged clearly inferior qualities. The conclusion can be drawn that advisory service for an optimization of nitrogen fertilization of sugar beet continues to be very important.
