At present some 15 000 growers in Belgium produce 6 million tonnes of beet on about 100.000 hectares, which allows the production of 960 000 tonnes of white sugar. The traditional beet growing zone is in the centre and the west of the country. During the past 20 years, due to the progress of beet yield and sugar content, white sugar production per hectare has increased from 7 to almost 10 tonnes, which places Belgium 2nd (behind France) in the EU ranking. The beet growers are organised in a producers' organisation, which starts from local groups to lead via three regional centres, the Co-ordination Committees ("Comites de Coordination"), to a national confederation, the CBB ("Confederation des Betteraviers Belges" = Confederation of Belgian Beet Growers). The first role of the beet growers' organisation is to control the beet reception operations carried out by the sugar factories (weight, tare and sugar content determination).
