Influence of different tillage systems on indicators of environmental effects

Systems of conservation tillage, which are increasingly important, are accompanied by intensive agricultural research. Most of the trials are concerned with the effects of tillage systems on plant production, soil science, phytopathology and economy. The aim of the present research is to describe and evaluate the environmental effects of tillage systems by using the following criteria: the risk of soil erosion by water, the energy balance and the potential risk to the environment of pesticide application. The data comes from the Gemeinschaftsprojekt Bodenbearbeitung. This long-term trials are being conducted on 9 sites in Eastern and Southern Germany. They corn-pare conventional, plough-based tillage with two forms of conservation tillage (with or without deep loosening) and with direct drilling. The environmental effects of the tillage systems are being modelled on a field specific basis for whole crop rotations, including sugar beet, using data from all the experiments. In order to consider field-specific conditions with the models, we plan to develop scenarios that include different slopes and different pesticides as variables.
