Ethofumesate residues in monoculture soils of sugar beet in Finland

Ethofumesate is classified as a slowly degrading active ingredient in Finnish conditions. This has caused a restriction not to use ethofumesate on the same field in successive years. If ethofumesate accumulates in the Finnish climatic conditions, the long-term monoculture should have increased levels of ethofumesate or its residues. Soil samples were taken from six sugar beet fields on monoculture for 10 to 20 years. The soil types varied from clay to organic soil, including all main soil types of beet fields in Finland. The soil samples were taken from the depths of 0-30 and 30-60 cm. Ethofumesate residues were extracted with acetone from water containing soil. After sample clean-up they were determined by gas chromatography using mass-selective detection. There was ethofumesate residue 15 to 160 mg per kg dry soil in the 0-30 cm samples. At the depth of 30-60 cm no residue was detected at any location.
