Practical solutions to ensure correct pesticide dosage in orchards in Norway

From 1st July 1997, all users of pesticides for commercial production are obliged to have a licence to spray in Norway. Calibration and control of equipment, as well as guidelines for good practice, have been devised to ensure correct dosage of pesticides. In Norway, as in most other countries, the dosage of pesticide had earlier been expressed as a concentration e.g. amount per 100 litres total rate, linked to a volume rate of 2000 litres per ha. Based on practical considerations and on research results, the dosage is expressed as amount of pesticide per 100-meter row for labels renewed from January 1998. A normal dose is set for trees of normal height and crown width of 2.5 and 2.0 meter respectively (the most common size). If the trees are smaller or larger the doses are correspondingly reduced or increased. The dose per square cm is approximately the same. The required dose is mixed with a suitable volume of water, which depends on nozzle size, number of nozzles, driving speed, etc. The integrated approach towards correct pesticide use and dosage in Norway is reported.
