Since 1996, the potential of winter pea is studied for the regions with field crops in Switzerland. On the basis of various trials, the following elements could be specified: Winter pea can be cultivated in the main areas for field crops in Switzerland, to replace spring pea or as a new crop. Only varieties of winter type offer a sufficient frost resistance for sowing in autumnspring varieties may resist sometimes in winter, but the risk of total losses is significant. Good conditions for soil tillage and sowing (5 cm depth), as well as a soil structure able to resist to the winter are determining for the success of the crop. Sowing is realised after mid-October. A very late sowing, after mid-November, may lead to incomplete plant population after winter. A fungicide protection can be advantageous at the very start of flowering. Yields vary from 40 to 60 dt/ha. The preservation of crops in the practice these next years will make it possible, to specify the place that winter pea can occupy in arable crops rotation.
