Field trials have been performed at the Swiss Federal Research Station of Changins (Pully) to study the influence of different surface covers on managment of nitrogen nutriments with Chasselas grape. Compared to a total perennial grass cover, the presence of underground clover (Trifolium subterraneum) every second row, increased the availability of mineral nitrogen (Nmin) during summer. This practice has improved significantly the nitrogen nutrition of the vine, as well as its vigour and fertility. A permanent cover with various botanical compositions showed intermediate effect.
