In Switzerland, most of the apricot orchards are located on slopes. The sowing of a ground cover on the embankments is necessary in order to control erosion. Such ground covers may also enhance biodiversity. Several mixtures of sees, composed of mono- and dicotyledoneaes, have been sown in a newly planted apricot orchard and evaluated on these two features. Thanks to the quick development of grasses, all mixtures allowed a good stabilization of the embankment. Nevertheless, the high proportion of monocotyledoneas limited the development of the other species. Between 1997 and 2001, the number of present species decreased in all plots. On slopes not too steep, the sowing density of grasses could certainly be reduced to favour others species development.
