The inspections carried out by the officers of the State Veterinary Administration within the framework of animal transport surveillance revealed that cases of violation of the principles of animal protection may and do occur. Selected transport groups of cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs were evaluated in the Czech Republic from 1996 to 2001. Veterinary measures were imposed to improve the level of protection in cattle in 0 to 1.35 % of the total number of cases, in pigs in 0.22 to 2.22 % of cases, and in sporadic cases in sheep and goats. When comparing the periods 1996-1998 and 1999-2001, the number of cases of cruelty to animals during their transport increased. This increase was significant in pigs. Our evaluation shows that it is inevitable to continue to control the animal protection during the transports.
