Heavy metals in parasite-host systems: tapeworm vs. fish

Concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni) in two parasite-host systems (1. Ligula intestinalis vs. Abramis brama, Blicca bjoerkna, Rutilus rutilus; 2. Bathybothrium rectangulum vs. Barbus barbus) were analysed. In the first system the parasite accumulated 12.5-18.9 times more Pb, 2.3-3.0 times more Cd, and 4.4-14.1 times more Cr than the muscles of intermediate hosts. In the second system, the strobila of gravid tapeworms accumulated 2.2 times more Pb, 1.2 times more Ni, and 2.3 times more Cr than fish muscles. Uninfected barbels exhibited 1.4 times more Pb, 1.6 times more Ni, and 1.7 times more Cr than the infected ones. Such difference was not found for Cd concentrations, nor did Cd accumulate in the parasite's strobila. The ability of tapeworms to accumulate heavy metals and their importance as bioindicators are discussed in particular.
