Regional differentiation of nitrate content in ground water in Poland

The very important factor for eutrofication of open water reservoirs is the concentration of biogenic compounds. The greatest problem for drinking water is nitrate and also ammonia surplus, the high concentration of which signifies a threat for health of people. In respect of agricultural ecosystems protection the monitoring of ground water began in Poland. The investigations were performed together by the Institute of Soil Science and the Plant Cultivation and Agrochemical Service in Poland. The studies showed the greatest quantities of ammonium and nitrate content in water received from fields with high doses of mineral and manure fertilization. About 45 % of water samples collected from farm wells were not useful for drinking due to excess of nitrate and ammonia content. However about half of ground water samples collected from drainage ditches, outlets of pipes and piezometers was situated in the first range for nitrate concentration in surface water.
