The effect of sex and growth rate on the lean meat content (LMC), musculus longissimus lumborum et thoracis (MLLT) depth and backfat thickness was studied in 216 hybrid pigs. The pigs were divided into 5 groups according to their weight gains as follows: 1) 600 g; 2) from 600 to 700 g; 3) from 700 to 800 g; 4) from 800 to 900 g; 5) from 900 to 1,000 g. The lean meat production and the MLLT depth was higher, while the fat deposition was lower in gilts than in barrows. The differences increased with increasing live weight. The highest MLLT depth was observed in gilts from 90 to 100 kg and in barrows from 80 to 90 kg of live weight. The MLLT depth decreased with increasing growth rate but only in gilts and not in barrows. The growth rate had no influence on fat deposition.
