Malting barley production and quality of the 2000 and 2001 harvests in 13 European countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Finland, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden) are presented and compared with special emphasis on quality parameters of barley and malt in the Czech Republic. The variety composition was very similar in all the studied countries with Scarlett as the most frequently cultivated variety. The acreage, yield, and quality parameters differed between the two years as well as countries. The highest yields were observed in Ireland and Holland, the lowest ones in Hungary. The barley quality of the 2000 harvest was unsatisfactory in the Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary.
