80 years have passed from the establishment of the Training and Experimental Forestry Distric at Jaervselja. One important activity of the Forestry District during that time has been the cultivation of foreign tree species at Jaervselja. The first foreign tree species were introduced here in the 1880's. At that time Martin Maurach took up the post of a forester there. Among the first foreign tree species introduced in the Jaervselja forests were Larix decidua and Pinus nigra. After a few years they were followed by Pinus strobus, P. cembra and Picea glauca. At that time the cultivation of foreign tree species in a forest pursued an aesthetic goal on one hand and an experimental aim on the other. Foreign tree species were mainly cultivated in groups mixed with local species. Of the tree species cultivated that time the best results were obtained with larches. Since the beginning of 1898 a number of new foreign tree species were introduced in the Jaervselja forests, such as Picea obovata, P. sitchensis, Abies sibirica A. balsamea, A. alba etc.
