Utilization of composted ash as a fertilizer and its effect on nodulation and seed yield of faba bean on nitosols of north Shewa

The pot trial was conducted in the year 1998 and 1999 at Sheno Agricultural Research Center. The soil samples used for the trial were collected from a farmer's field in Laymush area. The area is characterised by a tepid to cool submoist mountains and plateau (SM subscript of 2-5) agro-ecology. The five treatments tested were control (without inoculant and ash); Three rates of ashes (15,22.5 and 30 T ha-1) Commercial fertilizer TSP and Urea at the rate of 23/20.2 kg ha-1 N/P and Rhizobial Strain 'EAL 120' alone. The results obtained from the trial showed that the pH test for the soil samples taken at harvesting time of the crop was 6.45 - 7.07 on average in 1998 and in increased to 7.42 - 7.99 in 1999. Utilization of composted ash showed a potential to neutralise the acidic nature of the soil and influence the availability of plant nutrients in highland soils. The number of nodules counted in both at 4 weeks after emergence (4WAE) and 50% flowering stage of the crop was very high. Although there is a tendency to increase in number of nodules at later stage (50% flowering stage) of the crop treated with strain EAL-120 in combination with the different ash levels and inorganic fertilizer 23/20.2 kg ha-1 NP. Seed yield and other yield components, soil pH, nodule count, color size, position and nodule weight and also clemental composition of ashes obtained as a result of this trial is clearly illustrated in the paper. In addition to this farmers' experience in utilization of composted ash as a fertilizer is well quantified and discussed in the paper.
