The surface roughness of wood products depends on many factors related both to wood structural properties and woodworking operational parameters. This is probably the reason why we have no generally valid relationship to determine surface roughness parameters as a funktion of other factors. It is particulary difficult to account for the effect of wood structure. The purpose of the study presented in this article was to improve the characterisation method of surface roughness. The first part of the paper describes the theoretical background, and introduces the methods used in the study
