The application of Computer Tomography in animal nutrition research

The conventional methods used to measure the body composition in animals are total dissection, and chemical body analyses. Non-destructive techniques are frequently required (e.g. studies with humans, studies with valuable animals, or when sequential studies of the same subject are necessary). Thus, researchers are interested in alternative procedures for the estimation of body composition. Based on recent literature computerized tomography (CT) is a possible technique to estimate chemical body composition. The results of our experiments (conducted in Dutch-Hungarian cooperation) show that CT can be used to estimate the crude fat content of the pig body and to detect dietary (protein sources, Lys/DE ratio) induced changes in body composition.
