The objective of our work is to study the physiological response of the plant to the water stress and to search strains Mesorhizobium ciceri with tolerance to water deficiency. The experiment comprised three levels of water stresses and four strains of Rhizobium. The water constraint was applied during the vegetative stages, flowering and pod formation. For each stage it was maintained during 10 days. A significant interaction between the strains and the water stress was observed. The most efficient nitrogen fixing symbiotic association was obtained under middle to moderate water stress with the reference Mesorhizobium strains IC2018 ICRISAT. The severe stresses affected all the strains except C2260 which maintained the highest N2-fixing activity at the flowering stage. This strain maintained the highest nodule water content and nodule dry weight. It supported the highest production of dry matter in the aerial parts
