Utilization of alkali chemicals for increasing quality of sugarcane tops
1999
Jamarun, N.
The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of four (4) alkali chemicals, Urea, NaOH, KOH and NaOH-KOH mixed on quality of sugarcane tops. Sugarcane was harvested at 12 months after planting. The experiment was arranged in completely randomized design with 5 (five) treatments and 4 (four) replications for each treatment. The treatment was A: Sugarcane top (SCT) without alkali chemical, B: SCT + 8 percent Urea, C: SCT + 5 percent NaOH, D: SCT + 5 percent KOH and E: SCT + (2.5 percent NaOH + 2.5 percent KOH). The quantity of alkali based on dry matter basis. The result of experiment showed that treatment with alkali chemicals increased the quality of sugarcane tops. Urea indicated increase crude protein content due to high of non-protein nitrogen. Addition of NaOH, KOH and NaOH-KOH mixed reduced crude fiber content. The best alkali chemical for decreasing crude fiber content of sugarcane tops was 5 percent NAOH compared to the other chemicals used, where decreasing crude fiber content from 38.30 percent to 25.51 percent
