Varietal collection and evaluation of chrysanthemum

A total of 66 chrysanthemum accessions from local and foreign sources comprise the germplasm collection of the Horticulture Training and Research Institute pf BSU [Benguet State University; La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines]. They are being maintained in vivo in the greenhouse and in vitro in the tissue culture laboratory. A study was conducted subjecting the germplasm collection into a series of five observation trials from October 1997 to September 1998. The trials were set up in a greenhouse following Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Replicated trials involving promising accessions resulted in the identification of ten potential varieties for commerical production. As a result of the evaluation, the ideal characteristics of a chrysanthemum variety that could be considered by a grower were also identified. A mum grower should look into the following ideal characteristics of a variety: a) availability of clean and disease-free planting materials from reliable nurseries; b) easy to root, tip cuttings that root well within 2-3 weeks after sowing and quickly establish after transplanting; c) easy to establish and grow either in the field or greenhouse; d) vigorous growth; a hard variety that grows freely with minimum care; good suckering ability; a variety with high and faster propagation rate using shoot tips as propagating materials; f) resistant to insect pest and diseases; g) short maturity or early maturing variety; a variety that requires shorter growing period; h) superior flower quality; desirable flower color, size and texture, number and arrangement of flower per stem for spray type; and i) good producer of desirable stem length
