IPB Var 2 or "Tanco White", designated by the Philippine Seed Board (PSB) as UPL Cn-2, was developed by the Corn Breeding Group, Cereals Division, Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), College of Agriculture (CA), University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB). This is an open pollinated (OPV) White maize (Zea mays) variety that was derived from a cross between IPB Var 1 and Philippine DMR Composite 2. The release was recommend by the (PSB), now known as National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) in October 1984 and was released in 1985. The yield potential of this variety is similar to that of its yellow counter part IPB Var 1 or "Ginintuan". It has an average plant height of 201 cm in the dry season and 217 cm in the wet season and matures in 107 and 97 days for the dry and wet season planting, respectively. It has a higher level of resistance to the Philippine downy mildew (Pernosclerospora philippines), compared to IPB Var 1 but lower resistance to corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis). Under high artificial disease screening using half sib families that were generated from this OPV, only a 20% average infection was obtained during the wet season trials in 1984. This OPV, furthermore has an average yield of 5.07 t/ha, based on tests conducted in 8 Philippine locations, using 16 agronomic performance tests. Yield was slightly higher than that of SMC 102, while milling (grit) recovery was also high. Breeder seeds are maintained by the Cereals Division, IPB, CA, UPLB and 52 kernel packets will be distributed upon request. Appropriate recognition of the original seed sources of the OPV is required of all recipients of the seed if used to develop a new population, parental line, or hybrid
