Potential of pigwaste sludge in combination with inorganic fertilizer as source of nitrogen for yellow corn

The study was conducted to assess the potential of pigwaste sludge as organic fertilizer for yellow corn. It also identified the most effective rates of pigwaste sludge applied pure or in combination with organic fertilizer. Six treatments (N-source) were tested as follows: T1-ON, unfertilized control, T2-120 kg N of pigwaste sludge (PWS), T3-30 kg N of PWS + 90 kg N of inorganic fertilizer (IF), T4-60 kg of PWS + 60 N of IF, T5-90 kg N of PWS + 30 kg N of IF, and T6-120 kg N of IF. Plant height, number of leaves, length and diameter of corn ears, flesh herbage yield, fresh weight of husked ears, number of kernels per ear and dry weight of kernels were measured in the study. Results of the study showed that significant differences were registered on both growth and yield components of yellow corn. Plants in T6, produced the tallest plants (250.4 cm), highest number of leaves (914.27), longest and biggest ears (21.31 cm and 5.54 cm, respectively), highest herbage yield (4.82 kg), heaviest ears (323.33 gm), highest number of kernels (626.33), and heaviest kernels (2.04 kg) followed closely by plants in T4. T1 manifested the smallest plants (223.5 cm) and least number of leaves (11.87). As a result, T1 obtained the shortest and smallest ears (17.02 cm and 4.81 cm, respectively), lowest herbage yield (2.51 kg), highest ears (196.33 gm), least number of kernels (419.08), and highest kernels (1.08 kg)
