Multi-location morphological and physiological characterization of selected hybrid and open-pollinated corn varieties in the Philippines

Grain yield is the most common parameter used in evaluating corn varietal performance. However, varietal differences in grain yield can often be associated with morphological and physiological variations. Identifying morphological and physiological differences among corn varieties can be a useful tool in systems approach research such as defining breeding objectives, crop and site suitability analysis, simulation modeling and crop forecasting. In this study, morphological characters such as plant height, stem girth, leaf area index, number of ears per plant, ear size, dry matter pertitioning, and yield and yield components of hybrids (IPB var 911 and Cargill 818) and open-pollinated varieties (USM var 5, VisCA var 2 and CMU var 12) were measured. Physiological traits as a function of vegetative and reproductive growth stages were also determined. Multi-location trials were conducted during the 2000-2001 dry season in (1) Echague, Isabela, (2) Musuan, Bukidnon, (3) Kabacan, Cotabato, and (4) Baybay, Leyte representing different agro-climatic environments in the country. On-farm trials in farmers' fields were also carried out in (1) Alcala, Pangasinan, (2) La Carlota, Negros Occidental, (3) Argao, Cebu, and (4) Koronadal, South Cotabato during the same period. Results of this study provide useful information in establishing crop performance as a function of genetic by environment (G x E) interactions
