Two indigenous plants, Chenopodium album (Bathu) and Zinnia elegans (Zinnia) were subjected to phytochemical screening and the effect of saponins on the germination of sorghum and pearl millet was also noted. The results are summarized as below: Alkaloids and anthraquinones were absent in both Saponins were present in both plants. Steroid were also present in both plants. Flavonoids were present in both plants. Glycosides were present in Zinnia elegans and absent in Chenopodium album Chenopodium album (Bathu) was found to contain 10% saponins on dry weight basis Zinnia elegans (Zinnia) was found to contain 12% saponins on dry weight basis.
