Yield and earliness studies on American upland cotton cultivars

The experiment was conducted on five American upland cotton cultivars i.e., CRIS-9, CRIS-19, CRIS-52, CRIS-133 and CRIS-134 developed by CCRI, Sakrand. The trial was conducted in a CRBD with four replications on experimental area of the Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, during 1997. Five plants from each cultivar per replication were randomly selected and monitored on several parameters. Data thus collected were statistically analyzed by conducting analysis of variance. Out of 13 quantitative traits, no significant difference was observed for eight parameters i.e., plant height, main stem nodes/plant, number of sympodial, fruiting points, number of bolls, fruit retention (%) and seed cotton yield. The rest of the five parameters showed significant differences. The weekly data regarding NAWF indicated that June sowings are not suitable under Tandojam conditions. The results further suggested that the early maturity in cotton is a complex genetic trait influenced by several plant phenotypic characters which could be combined through appropriate breeding methods for developing suitable early maturing high yielding cultivars without loss of seed cotton yield. First three fruiting positions contributed about 95 to 97% of the total seed cotton yield in all the cultivars.
