Growth, morphology and fruit comparison of diploid and tetraploid kinnow mandarin

Kinnow mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) produced in Pakistan have exceptional fruit size, taste and flavor besides being quick growing and high yielded. Alternate bearing, late maturity and high number of seeds are its drawbacks. For the improvement of this cultivar, the potential of tetraploid Kinnow as an alternate cultivar with additional characters was investigated. Growth, morphology and fruit behavior of diploid and tetraploid trees was compared. Diploid trees were larger than tetraploids in height, spread and trunk girth. Tetraploids had thicker and broader leaves (5.29 cm). The diploid had high number of stomata/unit leaf area (7.42) but were larger in tetraploid leaves (28.18 mu). Tetraploids were significantly higher for fruit weight (153.3 g), fruit diameter (18.4 cm), rind thickness (0.70 cm) whereas diploids yielded higher TSS (9.5%), juice percentage (46.1%) and number of developed seed (19.0).
