Population trends of barley-feeding aphids and their parasitoids to an agroforestry environment

The agroforestry landscape can influence the distribution of barley- feeding aphids but has little influence on aphid parasitoid numbers. Aphids were more abundant in the arable control areas than in the arable alleys S. avenae was the only abundant aphid species on barley, although S graminum, M. dirhodum. R. padi and R. maidis were also present. These aphids were parasitised mainly by Aphidius uzbekistanicus agg. and A. picipes, and in turn by their hyperparasitoids Asaphes vulgaris, Dendrocerus aphidium. D. carpentri. Asaphes suspensus and Alloxysta victrix. The trends of population fluctuations detected by both the leaf survey and suction sampling methods in 1993 were mostly similar, both in the arable alleys and control areas. The numbers of mummies per aphid was found to be lower in the arable control areas than the arable alleys. Ratios of apterous adults to alates indicated that relatively higher numbers of alates were found in the control areas, but this difference was not statistically significant.
