The effect of water electrolytes on growth and carcass yield of stressed and non stressed broiler
2001
Mughal, B.B.
The present study was carried out to determine the effect of anti-stress electrolytes in drinking water on the growth and carcass yield of stressed and non-stressed broilers. Chicks were divided in three groups (30 chicks each). Birds in group (A) were kept as control, while chicks in group (g) were given electrolytes (5 g/10 liters water) under induced heat stress and group C was given electrolytes at the same rate but without induced heat stress for the 42 days. The feed consumption in groups A, B, C was 3400, 2683, and 2850 g respectively. The maximum feed was consummated by the chicks in group A (control). The water consumption in groups A, B, C was 5.801, 4.050 and 5.720 litters maximum in group A while the minimum in group B. The highest weight gain (1350.00 g) was recorded by the chicks in group C. The average feed conversion ratio in group A, B and C was 2.55, 2.09 and 2.11 respectively. Feed efficiency was significantly better in group B than the group A. The carcass weight was 765, 780.30 and 727.20 g. Highest in B and lowest in C. Dressing percentage was 55.38, 60.80 and 53.92. Average Liver weight in groups A, B and C was 50.30, 51.1.0 and 49.80 g, gizzard weight 32.64, 33.11 and 30.89 g and heart weight 6.90, 7.53 and 6.64 g respectively. Liver, heart acid gizzard weight was comparatively greater, in group "B", while it was lower in the groups. The mortality rate of broilers groups A, B and C was 16.6.6, 3.33 and 6.66 percent, highest in group "A" (control) while the lowest mortality in group "B". The cost per bird was 54.40, 50.29 and 57.15 rupee,, in groups A, B C respectively, while the broilers were sold at the live weight rate of 45 rupees per kilogram. Thus, the net profit realized and in groups A, B and C was Rs. 7.79, 9.33 and 5.79, respectively. However, it was noted that supplementation of electrolytes may be beneficial for the survival of heat stressed broilers at the rate of 5 gm liters of water.
