The deficiency of selenium was discovered in plants and soil in the northern part of Poland. Selenium is an indispensable microelement for people and animals. Selenium retards the development of different forms of cancer, decreases the harmful effect of heavy metals (Hg, Cu,Pb, Cd) and shows the radioprotective influence. Investigations were carried out with the Chinese cabbage. The plants were grown in pots filled with sphagnum peat and were treated with foliar fertilizer Ekolist at the concentration 1.5 percent increased the content of selenium in leaves over 2 times and 3 sprays increased the selenium content over 7 times i.e. up to 3.7 mg Se/kg dry matter
