Effect of substrate type on the yield and quality of tomato fruits (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) in glasshouse cultivation

The experiments were carried out in the spring-summer cycles of 1998-99 with 7 tomato cultivars. The results showed that higher yields of tomato were obtained when grown on rockwool than on coir straw - Cocovita. Tomato cultivars varied in yield. The average weight of fruits of all tomato cultivars was lower when grown on Cocovita. However, the type of substrate had no distinct effect on the content of sugars and vitamin C, but tomatoes grown on Cocovita contained fewer mineral elements. Fruits from plants grown on Cocovita contained more dry matter than those grown on rockwool
