Research on cold hardiness and growth of some Ilex x meserveae cultivars

Four cultivars of Ilex x meserveae: 'Blue Boy', 'Blue Girl', 'Blue Prince', 'Blue Princess' were evaluated for growth and winter hardiness in central Poland. Plants were cultivated under polyethylene shading cloth or in full sun. Half of plants both treatments were covered for winter with polypropylene fabric while the rest was left uncovered. Plants grown in shade were significantly larger and had fewer secondary shoots as compared to these grown in full sun. The shoots of plants growing in full sun were shorter than those on the plants grown under shade cloth. All cultivars in the experiment supported temperatures down to -25 degrees C without any visible injuries
