The effects of different cowpea [Vigna Unguiculata (L) Walp.] cultivars on witchweed (Striga asiatica (L) Kuntzel) management in the smallholder farming sector of Zimbabwe

Field experiments were conducted in Chinyika Resettlement Area (CRA) in Manicaland from 1996 to 1998 to evaluate the effectiveness of different cowpea cultivars in a maize/cowpea intercropping system on S. asiatica control and maize grain yield improvement. In the two rainy seasons, all the cowpea cultivars used effectively reduced the number of emerged S. asiatica plants m-2. The maize/cowpea intercrops also gave higher maize grain yields in the wet season (1996/97) but there were no differences in the dry season (1997/98), showing that their effects may depend on the type of the season. The use of any of these cowpea cultivars in a maize/cowpea intercropping system is recommended for smallholder (SH) sector where S. asiatica is a production constraint.
