The new two-rowed spring barley variety "Dukat" was recognised by the Yugoslav Commission in 1999. It was developed, through selection, by hybridization of spring barley varieties "Union" and "Kraguj". It is of an intensive type. It had grain yield much higher than the standard variety Novosadski 294. Protein content in grain and malt is somewhat lower than in standard variety, while extract content in malt (in fine grits) is slightly lower in new variety "Dukat". Grain and malt quality varies, depending on different climatic and soil factors, as well as on the level of modern agricultural methods applied. This was manifested in the agricultural - technological trial in Kragujevac, carried out in the period 1993 - 1994. Then, new variety "Dukat" has less than 11.5% proteins in malt, more than 79% extract, Kolbach index higher than 53 and Hartong index 46 at 45x C, which was much better quality than the one obtained in the 1997 trial of the Commission (Ognjanovic and coop., 1996).
