The most effective in nitrogen fixation are bacteria of the genus Rhizobium. Since nitrogen is often the limiting nutrient in soil, the use of appropriate strains of Rhizobium to supply nitrogen to the plant is economically and ecologically justified. The aim of this study was to assess the symbiotic effectiveness indigenous Rhizobium meliloti strains with alfalfa (Medicago sativa) as the host. The effectiveness of the strains was estimated by measuring dry shoot weight, nodule number, nitrogenase activity and nitrogen content of host plants. Following the Sirois-Peterson nitrogenase index obtained by Hardy ARA methods, the strain with enzymatic activity up to 60nmol C2H2/h/plant can be determinate as economically important strain for microbiological fertilizer.
