Determination of heavy metals and radionuclides in the alluvial soil and clay of the river Danube [Serbia, Serbia&Montenegro]

The aim of this study was to find out whether there was any contamination of the alluvium of the Danube river and clay in its immediate vinicity, Serbia (Serbia&Montenegro), as the result of NATO aggression during 1999. Beside the usual examinations we performed the analyses of heavy metals and determined the presence of radionuclides in order to determine whether the soil is adequate for agricultural purposes. Results of radioactivity analysis in soil samples indicated usual activity levels of natural as well as artificial radionuclides. The results showed that there were no changes in the soil content and that there was no contamination by heavy metals and radionuclides, which indicates its adequaty for agricultural purposes. Heavy metal and radionuclide content was below the maximally allowed concentrations upstream of Danube toward Novi Sad (note: all samples taken from the right bank of the Danube).
