Non-uniformity of maize plants in dependence on the depth of sowing

Two-year trial was set up in DPP Macva, Sabac (Serbia, Serbia&Montenegro), during 1997 and 1998 in order to study the effect of the depth of sowing on maize growth and development in the sowing-emergence period. The stated effect was monitored over the following stages: the effect of the depth of sowing on the time of emergence, then on the temperature sum for the sowing-emergence period, the effect of the depth of sowing on dry kernel weight yield and grain yield of maize. Soil temperatures were measured at the appropriate depth of sowing during the sowing-emergence period. Weather conditions varied over years of investigation and significantly affected obtained results. The sowing-emergence period lasted from 8.58 to 10.47, i.e. 13.35 and 16.47 days in 1997, i.e. 1998, respectively. The effective temperature sum for the sowing-emergence period amounted to 70.34-77.35 deg C in 1977. This sum increased with the moisture increase in the sowing layer and amounted to 83.20-91.86 deg C. In 1998, the effective temperature sum amounted to 103.71-117.29 deg C. The greater depth of sowing and the lower soil temperatures were, the higher number of days from sowing to emergence was - from 8.58 to 11.64 in 1997 and from 13.35 to 16.47 in 1998. The increased soil moisture during the sowing-emergence period did not affect yield of neither dry weight nor maize grain. Weather conditions significantly affected the harvest index. Maize grain yield significantly depended on weather conditions in the investigation years and amounted to 11.24 t/ha, i.e. 4.88 t/ha, in 1997 and 1998, respectively.
