Anatomical and physiological traits of Lathyrus vernus (L.) Bernh. 1800 (Fabaceae)

Investigation of wild relatives of cultivated plants reveals their positive and desirable characteristics, which can be introduced into cultivated genotypes during improvement process. Species of Lathyrus genus are wild relatives of cultivated pea. The results of anatomical and physiological analyses of Lathyrus vernus (L.) Bernh. 1800 are presented in this paper. It was concluded that leaves of the species are hypostomatic. with anomocytic stoma type. The number of stomata per leaf surface is relatively low. Non-glandular hairs are present on both epidermises, while glandular ones only on adaxial epidermis. Mezophyl is almost homogenous, with poorly differentiated pallisade tissue. According to analyzed anatomical characteristics it was concluded that leaves have mesomorphic-sciomorphic structure. Cross section of stem is rounded to oval, with two winged outgrowths. Analysis of content of mineral elements according to plant organs revealed that concentrations of N, P and Ca were the highest in the leaves, and of K and Na in the stem. The highest content of photosynthetic pigments was found in the leaves, and it was much less so in the stem. The relation of intensity of photosynthesis and respiration was favourable.
