The aim of this research was to study the polymorphism at alfa sub(s1)-casein locus in goat milk from domestic Serbian breed. The phenotypic variants were characterized by isoelectric focusing method. Electrophoretic profiles showed the presence of alfa sub(s1)-casein variant A,B,E,F,O and a not identified variant which presents the specific protein bands with an apparent isoelectric point between A and B variants. In the samples analyzed the frequency of this unknown variant was high (23.3%). The frequency of "strong" and "medium" variants (A,B/E) was high (56.7%), in respect to "week" and "null" variants (F and O) (20%). In comparison with other studies concerning alfa sub(s1)-casein polymorphism, these preliminary results suggest likeness with Mediterranean goat breeds from Southern Italy and North Africa.
