Yield components, yield and quality of alfalfa seed depending on cutting schedule

Karagic, Dj.
Three-year experiments have been conducted at Rimski Sancevi experiment field (Serbia, Serbia&Montenegro) to determine the dependence of yield components, yield and seed quality on cutting schedule. Four schedules have been examined: early (forage cutting on 5 May), medium (cutting on 15 May), late (cutting on 25 May) and seed production from the third cut (cuttings on 5 May and 5 June). The experiments included seven alfalfa varieties, 6 domestic (NS-Banat ZMS II, Krusevacka 22, Novosadjanka H-11, Zajecarska 83, NS-Slavija and NS-Mediana ZMS V) and one French (Europe). Ecological conditions of the year of growing had the major impact on the seed yield and yield components of alfalfa. Among them, the total amount and distribution of rainfall were most important. Depending on the conditions in the year of growing, the yields varied from 166 to 715 kg/ha. Variations of seed yield and yield components in alfalfa may be reduced by scheduling the time of citting, i.e., it is possible to mitigate the negative effects of the year of growing.
