Concentrations of total hydrocarbon compounds, mineral oils and polar fraction of hydrocarbon compounds in water were correlated with microbiological water quality parameters. Linear correlation was not confirmed. This is an indication of more complex functional relationship. However, comparison of the correlation coefficients indicated dependence of lypolites number on content of polar hydrocarbon molecules for polluted area. Choice of characterization method should be termed by the aim of the analysis. Both methods of characterization and their relationship important for deeper understanding of hydrocarbon pollution as well as formation of future statement on quality criteria in natural waters.
