Influence of lycopene on blood and liver prooxidant/antioxidant balance in thyroxin treated rats

Recent studies showed the relationship between oxidative stress and thyroid disorders. Lycopene, the main carotenoid from tomato, is known as an antioxidant in vitro and in vivo. This study underlines the effects of reactive oxygen species and lycopene administration in experimental hyperthyroidism. It has been used white, male Wister rats divided into five groups: 1st (C) - control, 2nd (L) - treated with lycopene, 3rd (h) - treated with carbimazole, 4th (H) - treated with L-thyroxin and 5th (HL) - L-thyroxin and diet rich in lycopene. The oxidative stress markers (lipid peroxides) and the antioxidants enzymes activities (catalase, glutathione-peroxidase, superoxid dismutase) were determined. The antioxidant enzymes activities were found increased in blood and in target tissues in rats treated with thyroxin and decreased in rats fed with diet rich in lycopene. Also, lipid peroxides (malondyaldehide) from serum and liver was found increased in rats treated with thyroxin and decreased in rats fed with diet rich in lycopene. The results underline the implications of oxidative stress in thyroid hyperfunction. A supplemented in lycopene diet led to a decrease of oxidative stress markers and antioxidants levels in blood and in target tissue (liver).
