Oportunities of Estonian agriculture in the European Union
2003
Noot, A. (Ministry of Agriculture, Tallinn (Estonia))
Throughout the nineties there have occurred dramatic changes in Estonian agriculture. These changes involve decrease of production volume, turnover of the structure of agricultural entities, decrease of the share of agriculture in the gross domestic product and in total employment, growing unemployment in rural areas. The undergoing process of joining the EU has caused both optimistic and pessimistic statements at the same time. The real benefits will be a stabilised economic environment, especially the stabilisation of prices on agricultural produce. According to the first estimations the system of CAP support will increase added value in our agricultural sector by 3 times and producers income will rise by 1,5 times. Some doubts have been expressed about the double influence of production quota system, which can be limiting for production growth especially in Estonia where the level for negotiating the quotas has been fixed quite low due to decreased production volume
