Trial of silvicultural system of selective cutting and strip planting in Seruyan Forest Complex, Central Kalimantan (Indonesia)

In order to overcome some weaknesses the application of sylvicultural system of Indonesian Selective Cutting and Planting (TPTI), a new silvicultural system i.e. Selective Cutting and Strip Planting (TPTJ) has been established as another alternative for silvicultural system in Indonesia. As a new silvicultural system it need a special trial before executing it to anticipate technical problem that might arise during the execution of the system. A special trial of the system has been carried out in Seruyan forest complex, Central Kalimantan during the last two years. Result of the trial are as follow: (a) Mechanical felling with small tree diameter (30-40 cm) has created waste by 14 percent. (b) Initial damage of residual forest stand caused by mechanical logging with felled tree diameter limit of 30 cm is much higher than that of 40 cm and it also resulted in occurence of bareland (openland). (c) Although there is some reductions in the number of forest natural regeneration due to mechanical logging, there is still enough forest natural regeneration of commercial tree species available. Moreover, there is slightly increase in the number of forest natural regeneration of commercial tree species for 2 years residual forest stand. (d). Mechanical felling with 40 cm tree diameter limit did not create ditch erosion. Surface run off is relatively small varying from 4.7-7.1 ton/ha. There is not big change on micro climate condition in the area. There is some correlations between tree diameter harvested and the number of missing flora. The bigger tree diameter harvested, the more flora in the area will disappear. The number of under plant (under storey) decrease by 3.5 percent due to mechanical logging in the area. (e) Among the nine tree species grown in the area, Azadirachta excelsa (sentang), Peronema canescen (sungkai), Shorea stenoptera (tengkawang) and Shorea sp. (red meranti) showed more rapid growth both in its diameter and height compared to the other tree species. Survival percentage of the tree species (2 years) was around 67.6-85.0 percent. (f) Size of plant hole of 20 x 20 x 20 m and 30 x 30 x 30 m and clear strip of 1 m and 3 m did not influence the growth of the trees. (g) In applying silvicultural system of selective cutting and strip planting in Seruyan forest. It has to be followed by a decrease of initial damage of residual forest stand. This could be done by: (1) Using old track (2) Cutting tree diameter limit is 40 cm and there is limitation in the number of harvested trees (3) Cutting tree diameter is increased by 50 cm (h) To achieve the success of TPTJ application, survival plant percentage need to be increase by 80 percent in minimum
