Dispostion of ciprofloxacin in urine after intravenous administration in lactating cows

Fluoroquinolones are broad spectrum agents with activity against most gram positive and gram negative bacterial pathogens, mycoplasma, chlamydiae and rickettsiae. They are effective against organisms that have developed resistance to other antibacterials such as beta-lactam antibotics, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, folic acid antagonists and macrolides. They are used to treat systemic bacterial infections in domestic animals. The major route of excretion of fluoroquinolones is through kidneys. On in vitro antibiotic sensitivity testing, found the urinary pathogens in different domestic and wild animal apecies to be resistant to commonly used antibacterial agents; but, all the isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin. The present investigation was planned to ascertain the concentrations of ciprofloxacin in urine when the drug was administered to lactating cows parenterally at therapeutic dose, so that its usefulness in treating urinary infection could be assessed.
