Water and nutrient resources are limited and huge amount of energy is required for exploitation of underground water and production of fertilizers. These are the principal components and constitute the major part of cost of crop production. Now-a-days, agriculture is facing increased competition for limited water resources. During next three decades, there will be increasing number of deficit regions or countries or some of the major agriculture producing regions of the world. Irrigation water is costly and its availability for agriculture is expected to further decrease due to increased demand for domestic and industrial uses. Low input agriculture strategy should be adopted to protect groundwater quality. The choice of appropriate cropping system and management practices may minimize NO3-N leeching. Besides crop diversification may also reduce the decline and rise in depth of water table.
